Hundreds of homes in and around Ashby have had their bin collections missed over the past month as a district council continues to grapple with a barrage of issues.

North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC) has been struggling to collect people's black, recycling, and garden waste bins since the start of last month, with more than 200 streets around the district being missed since July 24.

The council has also been forced to play catch-up by either collecting bins the next day or the day after – which it blames on vehicle breakdowns, staff sickness and the current heatwave.

The Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) has also found that NWLDC has been advising residents that it currently "doesn't have the capacity" to collect people's bins due to these multiple problems.

Back at the start of July, the LDRS reported that the district council had to stop garden waste and food waste collections due to the heatwave. However, it appears it has continued to struggle to catch up and keep up since the start of July.

This week, NWLDC confirmed it had missed large areas of Castle Donington and Coleorton due to vehicle breakdowns, affecting around 35 streets, according to its website.

Last week, the council also confirmed it had missed multiple streets in Ashby, Hugglescote, Newton Burgoland, Snarestone and Swepstone after recovering from two full days of missed collections as well as "increased staff sickness levels, vehicle breakdowns and the need to maintain scheduled collections".

Large areas of Coalville, Long Whatton, Kegworth, and Thringstone have also had their bin collections missed, including streets in Belton, Griffydam, Diseworth, Peggs Green, and Long Whatton. On July 14, more than 30 streets were also missed in Ashby.

In an online statement last week, NWLDC said: "The impact of the extreme heat experienced earlier in July continues to affect our waste and recycling collections.

"Recovering two full days of missed collections across the district is a significant challenge, particularly when combined with increased staff sickness levels, vehicle breakdowns and the need to maintain scheduled collections.

"Please be assured our crews are working exceptionally hard to return our service to normal as soon as possible."

The LDRS asked the district council how long it expects these issues to remain, why it keeps missing so many streets and what it is doing to prevent missed collections – however, a response was not sent in time for publication.
