Coverage of Ashby's Platinum Jubilee Street Party even found its way across the pond to the United States, it has been revealed.

Ashby de la Zouch Town Council's events & entertainments committee discussed the event at last night's meeting (Monday).

Town Centre Manager Stuart Benson spoke about the success of the party, which saw Market Street closed to traffic and over 2,000 people attending.

Tables were lined up for the entire length of the street and, despite a scare about bad weather from the Met Office, the party went ahead as planned.

The committee were also told that the event was mentioned in almost every national newspaper the following day - and the event was described as 'iconic' by one councillor.

Stuart also admitted that people feared the event would be called off due to the forecast - with Blackfordby's planned event cancelled the same day,

But the party in Ashby went ahead and also gained attention from the USA, as Stuart explained: "I think we managed to pull off an absolutely fantastic event for the town."

"I was getting phone calls from people asking if we were going to call it off, and would they be getting refunds.

"But I was determined to put the event on no matter what.

"Radar Events Services did a fantastic job in keeping everyone entertained throughout the day.

"There was a great community spirit and we hit virtually every single national newspaper going.

"It was a fantastic response and we even got on to NBC in America - the reach was that good.

"I was very pleased, everyone enjoyed themselves."

Cllr Mary Tuckey added: "Our street parties are iconic."
