Houses Evacuated In Blackfordby After 'Explosive Material' Found in Garage

Houses had to be evacuated in Blackfordby today after suspected explosive materials were found at a property in the village.

They were discovered in a garage and police, an explosives team and the fire service were called to the scene in North Close.

The materials were later disposed of safely.

A spokesman for Leicestershire Police said: "Shortly after 9.15am today (Friday 7 August) we received a report that what were believed to be explosive materials had been found in the garage of an address in North Close, Blackfordby.

"The report was made by someone who had been clearing out the property.

"In order to ensure and maintain public safety, a cordon was put in place and a number of properties were evacuated.

"Police stayed at the scene with colleagues from Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service and Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) officers.

"EOD removed the materials to dispose of safely."
