New coronavirus cases diagnosed in the last 24 hours have dropped off slightly in the city and county.

North West Leicestershire had one new confirmed case.

On both Tuesday and yesterday more than 100 cases were added to cumulative tolls in Leicester and Leicestershire – today's round total is 85.

Some 47 cases were added to the city's total, while the remaining 38 were identified across the county.

Broken down to district and borough level, it was Charnwood that had the biggest increase, with 14 new cases.

Oadby and Wigston, an area being closely watched by public health bosses and the Government added just eight to its toll.

Blaby, another area for concern, saw nine people test positive.

Harborough and Hinckley and Bosworth both added three new cases, North West Leicestershire added one.

There were no new cases in Melton.

When being quizzed by MPs in the House of Commons this morning, health secretary Matt Hancock said that more than 1,000 tests were carried out in Leicester yesterday.

The local figures updated at 4.30pm today (Thursday) are:

Leicester - 6,344 total cases - Rate per 100,000 population: 1,791

Blaby - 715 total cases - Rate per 100,000 population: 704

Charnwood - 1,043 total cases - Rate per 100,000 population: 561

The county's first Covid-marshals hit the streets of Oadby, Wigston and South Wigston in an attempt to encourage people to follow coronavirus rules.

The area has entered a 'self-imposed' lockdown with John Boyce, leader of Oadby and Wigston Borough Council calling on people not to mix with other households.

A curfew has also been placed on the area's parks, banning people from using them between 5pm and 7am.
