Councillor calls for action over 'dangerous and disruptive' situation as key Ashby route is set to be closed again

A main Ashby route is to be closed again next month for a week so that works can be carried out.

The section of Tamworth Road between Avenue Road and Lower Packington Road will be shut from February 14.

And one Ashby councillor has described the situation as 'dangerous and disruptive'.

The reason given for the closure is so that S&R Construction can 'safely facilitate ongoing new connections which commenced in October, 2021'.

Leicestershire County Council Highways says the work should not last more than one week.

Cllr Barbara Kneale, speaking at last Monday's Ashby de la Zouch Town Council Planning Committee meeting, said: "We're having a closure in Tamworth Road again.

"That will increase the traffic in Avenue Road again.

"Last time, we had traffic jams at both ends of the street and I wondered if there could be any traffic management system put in place or traffic calming?

"It's very difficult, particularly at school time, and people often use Avenue Road as a short cut anyway.

"There were some cones put out last time, but that meant no-one had anywhere to park.

"It is quite dangerous and disruptive down that road, and something needs to be done."

It was agreed that a letter should be written to Leicestershire County Council Highways asking that the situation be looked at.
