Commonwealth Day: Ashby de la Zouch Town Council and Woodcote Primary School Raise Flag At War Memorial

Ashby de la Zouch Town Council joined with more than 850 locations throughout the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man, UK Overseas Territories, and Commonwealth countries on Commonwealth Day 2020, on Monday at 10am, in raising the Commonwealth Flag.

The Mayor of the Town, Councillor Graham Allman and his wife Mayoress Charmaigne, joined with Curate Stewart Betts and schoolchildren from Woodcote Primary School at a ceremony at the War Memorial on Brook Street, Ashby de la Zouch to raise the Commonwealth Flag in a shared celebration of the family of nations that encompasses the globe. 

This unique initiative, now in its sixth year, has again caught the imagination of thousands of participants from all walks of life, inspiring them to join with others throughout the Commonwealth.

 

The Chairman of Ashby de la Zouch Town Council, Councillor Graham Allman, said: "I am delighted that the Town Council, on behalf of the people of the town, has joined in with this international celebration of the work of the Commonwealth. This unique initiative is catching the imagination of thousands of participants from all walks of life, inspiring them to join with others throughout the Commonwealth. 

 

As a collective public expression of commitment to the Commonwealth, it enables participants to show appreciation for the values the Commonwealth upholds, and the opportunities offered for friendship and cooperation with fellow Commonwealth citizens around the world."

The Commonwealth Affirmation was read out at the ceremony before the raising of the Commonwealth flag at 10.00hrs at the War Memorial garden on Brook Street. In a common act of witness around the globe members of this great family of nations will reaffirm the commitment of all Commonwealth member states to democracy, development, and respect for diversity.
