Ashby MP Andrew Bridgen has predicted that Boris Johnson will not be Prime Minister by the time the Conservative Party Conference comes around in October.

A confidence vote by Tory MPs tonight (Monday) resulted in a victory for Johnson by 241 votes to 148.

However, he suffered a rebellion bigger than Theresa May did when she was challenged as Prime Minister.

The result means 59 per cent of Conservative MPs backed Boris Johnson, with 41 per cent voting against him.

But Mr Bridgen, Conservative MP for North West Leicestershire, says this is not the end of the story.

He has been a long-term opponent of Johnson's Premiership ever since the 'Partygate' controversy leaked out.

Earlier today, Mr Bridgen said that his constituents had 'tired of the Prime Minister'.

But this evening (Monday), speaking to BBC News, he made it clear that the result meant the issue was not going away.

Mr Bridgen said: "He's got a far worse result than Theresa May had a few years ago and the vote that brought down Mrs Thatcher.

"Both of those Prime Ministers went on to resign.

"I just hope that, given the mood of the public, the Cabinet would go and tell the Prime Minister, in Steve Baker's words: "The gig's up".

"We were told at the 1922 Committee Meeting, before this vote, the Prime Minister said: 'Vote for me tonight, and we end all of this uncertainty'.

"But that's not going to be the case, we have Privileges Committee looking into whether the Prime Minister deliberately misled Parliament.

"That's not going to report until October, this will rumble on.

"We've got two very challenging by-elections coming up at opposite ends of the country.

"The pressure's still on the Prime Minister. This a pyrrhic victory."

The vote means that there cannot be another leadership challenge for 12 months.

But Mr Bridgen added: "Rules can be changed in extremis.

"I'll make a prediction that there'll be a new leader of the Conservatives by the time of the party conference this year."
