The planting of Ashby's Tiny Forest is set to go ahead this winter.

Ashby de la Zouch Town Council's Parks & Cemetery Committee heard last week, in Blackfordby, that correspondence has been received from Earthwatch which confirmed that a second funding bid has been successful.

The project is also being supported by the National Forest and Leicestershire County Council.

Cllr Carl Benfield asked about the opportunity to engage with local schools and the wider community in developing the project.

He was told it was understood that community engagement would form part of the project plan.

Initial contact had been made with Willesley Primary School, which isa adjacent to Western Park, but it would also be necessary to provide background information to local residents.

Earthwatch will be consulted on this.

The Town Council re-confirmed its commitment to plans for the Tiny Forest in July.

Once planted, it would be the first to be established in the National Forest.

It is the second time the project has been proposed.

Last December, the council's Parks & Cemetery committee was told it would not be happening as preference had given to Salford and Newcastle Upon Tyne.

But now the council was then contacted by Earthwatch with another invite to participate in a Tiny Forest project.
