Ashby United CFC has been backed by last weekend's opponents after a player was subjected to homophobic abuse from the touchline.

Officials from Ashby United highlighted the incidents on the club's website last Monday.

A statement has also been issued by Swadlincote-based opponents Springfield Sports Bar FC condemning the abuse.

Ashby United said it had been reported to the relevant authorities and will make no further comment until investigations - which are believed to involve the police - have been concluded

But the Springfield Sports Bar FC statement reads: "On behalf of everyone at Springfield Sports Bar FC, we are shocked to hear the news that an Ashby United player was subjected to homophobic abuse at yesterday's game.

"We stand by Ashby and their player and will assist in any way possible to identify the individual involved.

"After speaking to the players, they also feel let down.

"And they are disappointed that such as good game of football can be ruined by someone on the sideline.

"We as a club are against all forms of discrimination and believe it has no place in football."

The match was played at Woodhouse Recreation Ground in Woodville, and the Burton & District Sunday Football League fixture ended as a 3-3 draw.

Ashby United's original statement reads: "Ashby United Community Football Club is horrified to learn that one of our players was subject to sustained homophobic abuse during a match over the weekend.

"We pride ourselves on being an inclusive, welcoming club to everyone, no matter their age, gender, race, or sexuality.

"Any form of abuse will never be tolerated nor go unchallenged.

"Abuse of any nature has no place in football, or the wider community and we are now liaising with the relevant authorities regarding the incident."
