An Ashby United Community Football Club it is 'horrified' that one of its players was subjected to "sustained homophobic abuse" in a match last weekend.

The club, formed just over a year ago, has made a point of encouraging inclusivity and being part of the community.

But they say that incidents such as this will 'not be tolerated' and that the 'relevant authorities' have been informed.

The club released the following statement on its website today (Monday).

It reads: "Ashby United Community Football Club is horrified to learn that one of our players was subject to sustained homophobic abuse during a match over the weekend.

"We pride ourselves on being an inclusive, welcoming club to everyone, no matter their age, gender, race, or sexuality.

"Any form of abuse will never be tolerated nor go unchallenged.

"Abuse of any nature has no place in football, or the wider community and we are now liaising with the relevant authorities regarding the incident."
