That includes the major supermarkets who are closed for all or part of the day.
The large Tesco store at Resolution Road will be closed all day.
Tesco CEO, Jason Tarry, issued a message to shoppers which reads: "We are deeply saddened by the death of Her Majesty The Queen.
"Our thoughts and condolences are with the Royal Family as we mourn the loss of our longest-serving British monarch.
"On the morning of the funeral on Monday 19 September our stores across the UK will remain closed to allow our colleagues to pay their respects.
"Our Superstores and Tesco Extras will stay closed all day, while our Express stores will re-open from 5pm to help serve our customers and communities during the evening.
"We're sorry for the inconvenience and hope you understand the reasons behind our decision."
The Co-op store in Derby Road will be closed until 5pm.
The retailer has published a message on its website which reads: "Our Co-op would like to offer our deepest condolences to the Royal Family, following the news of the death of Her Majesty The Queen.
"She dedicated herself to faithfully serving the nation during her long reign. Our Co-op has fond memories of the day Her Majesty The Queen and His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh opened our support centre, 1 Angel Square, in 2013.
"Many of you will personally be reflecting on your own special memories over the coming days.
"We join the Royal Family, our colleagues, customers, members and those from around the world who will be reflecting on her historic reign.
"As a mark of respect and to give our colleagues, customers and members time to reflect and mourn, our stores will be closed on the 19th September until 5pm."
Central England Co-op, with one store in Market Street, and another in Burton Road, is also marking the day.
A message on social media says: "Our thoughts are with the Royal Family at this time, as the country comes together to pay tribute and remember Queen Elizabeth II.
"As a mark of respect and to honour Her Majesty The Queen, there will be a change to our opening hours on Monday 19th September to allow our colleagues to pay tribute.
"Our large stores will close for the day.
"Our local convenience stores and petrol stations will open from 5pm.
"Our Funeral homes will continue to hold a number of funerals that have already been arranged on this day."
