A pre-order token system is being put into place for the rides when Ashby Statutes returns from this Friday.

The move is to make the event as Covid-safe as possible for the traditional fair in Market Street.

The Statutes did not take place last year during the pandemic, although a children's ride was installed in Brook Street to keep the 801-year fair alive in some form Children's ride gives Ashby a presence during lockdown.

But it is back this year, although organisers Pat Collins Fairs have brought in a token system for the rides to ensure as much social distancing as possible can be implemented.

Tokens for the Statutes rides can be bought HERE.

There will be no cost to enter the fair itself.

North West Leicestershire District Council has given more details and a spokeswoman said: "As we approach Autumn, this annual event in Ashby opens on Friday 17 September, bringing some colour and excitement to the town.

"From waltzers to dodgems, from hook a duck to darts, there is something for everyone, including some very old attractions and some bright, modern and scary ones!

"Last year, Ashby Statutes Fair was cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions and organisers, Pat Collins Funfair, North West Leicestershire District Council and Ashby-de-la-Zouch Town Council took the decision to prioritise public safety.

"Pat Collins Limited has been working with the Safety Advisory Group which includes Public Health England to ensure that this year's event is delivered in a Covid-safe way.

"Additional measures have been put in place, including a pre-order token system to reduce the need for social contact."

Councillor Tony Gillard, Portfolio Holder for Business and Regeneration at North West Leicestershire District Council, said: "The Statutes Fair is a popular event and I'm sure many, like me, will be pleased to see it return to Ashby after the necessary decision was taken to cancel the event last year.

"Pat Collins Limited has worked hard to deliver the fair in a Covid-safe way with measures in place to keep the spread of COVID-19 to a minimum.

"If you're visiting the fair this year, please remember to enjoy it safely and follow the guidance to keep yourselves and others safe."

Opening times:

  • Friday 17 - 6pm until 11pm
  • Saturday 18 - 12noon until 11pm
  • Sunday 19 - 12noon until 8pm (for families with younger children)
  • Monday 20 - 4pm until 10pm (during the morning the fair is open to children with disabilities which is organised by Ashby Lions and supported by Ashby School)
  • Tuesday 21 - 4pm until 10pm

The District Council have reminded motorists that there will be traffic delays as a result of the Statues.

As Market Street and Brook Street are closed, a comprehensive one-way traffic system operates around the town.

Drivers are asked to plan for delays, especially around peak travel times in the morning and evening.

Temporary bus stops will be in operation on North Street on The Green, and South Street near the car park.
