Ashby School is holding a month of special events to celebrate diversity and challenge discrimination - encouraging students to be #ProudtobeAshby.

The school will explore issues like race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality and faith.

Ashby School's website explains that the programme of events ties in with important national dates, including Black History Month, anti-bullying initiatives, Diwali celebrations and Inter Faith Week.

Events will include a live webinar by renowned historian Robin Walker to mark Black History Month.

He will deliver the session to all schools in the LiFE MAT, discussing Ancient African civilisation and contemporary black British history.

Although the session will take place via weblink, it is designed to be interactive and enable students to engage and ask questions.

As part of the curriculum, faculties will also explore themes which highlight the importance of equality and diversity.

In modern languages, students will learn about role models of different ethnicities while, in design, there will be a focus on the important role played by female designers.

The achievement of influential figures from the LGBTQ+ community will also be discussed.

Roger Skervin, Assistant Headteacher responsible for culture and community, said: "We want to encourage our students to speak up against stereotypes and to challenge discrimination.

"Diversity contributes so much to our society, from the food we eat to the clothes we wear and the music we listen to, and so much more. In line with what is happening across the country, it is important that our students are educated to stand up and speak out against oppression and discrimination, whether it's based on race, gender, sexuality or something else entirely.

"We want all of our students to be part of a community that values diversity and where everyone can be #ProudtobeAshby."
