Three Ashby road junctions have been highlighted in Leicestershire County Council's new transport plan for the A511.

Roundabouts linking the town with Smisby Road, Nottingham Road and the A42 Flagstaff Island come under a new transport plan for Coalville - which says 'significant changes' are needed.

The County Council has launched an Interim Coalville Transport Strategy - covering the town, the A511 and surrounding area - and wants to hear your thoughts.

The council has explained what will be happening.

Last year, the county council's Cabinet considered a report on recent transport studies in the county that would support the development of an interim Coalville Transport Strategy (ICTS).

Now the council's Transport and Strategy Policy Team has worked with North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC) to produce a formal strategy document.

The document confirms that significant changes to transport infrastructure are required to support the growth identified by NWLDC in and around Coalville.

The interim strategy is particularly relevant to the development of a package of improvement schemes along the A511.

The council has previously consulted in proposals for the A511 and a funding announcement from the Government is expected shortly.

The interim strategy also sets out how the council will continue to refine proposals for a number of complementary schemes including the:

  • A511/Smisby Road roundabout
  • A511/Nottingham Road roundabout
  • A511/A42 Junction 13
  • Copt Oak Crossroads
  • A511/M1 Junction 22

As this an interim strategy, there will be opportunities in the future to refresh the strategy, for example, with an update on the development of our wider plans for cycling and walking and passenger transport across the district as well as a consultation on the A511 Coalville Growth Corridor scheme.

The ICTS also reflects on the work being done with its district partners to develop cycling and walking proposals and the council's development of a Bus Service Improvement Plan for Leicestershire, which is currently being consulted on.

The council is keen to hear people's views on the interim Coalville Transport Strategy.

In particular, it would welcome comments on various aspects of the strategy, including:

  • its scope
  • the challenges presented
  • the prioritisation of highways and transport projects
  • the strategy for complementary highways' schemes, passenger transport and active travel

Once the engagement exercise has closed, the council will analyse the feedback and review the proposals.

The reviewed proposals and engagement findings will then be presented to the council's cabinet later in the year where a decision will be made on how to proceed.

The proposals – and how these have been reflected in our decision making, will also be available on the council's Have Your Say pages.
