The flag at Ashby Fire Station was at half-mast today (Thursday) in memory of a former town firefighter who passed away earlier this month.

A message on the station's Facebook page says the tribute was for Keith Bale, who was one of the firefighters who attended the Kegworth Air Disaster 32 years ago.

He also received the Queen's Long Service and Good Conduct Medal.

The post reads: "Today our flag is at half-mast as we remember Keith Bale, a former Firefighter at Ashby Station who sadly passed away suddenly on Sunday, 11th July 2021 aged 63.

"Keith was a firefighter at Ashby from 1985 until 2008, he was a popular member of the crew and throughout his time at Ashby he attended many incidents including the Kegworth Air Disaster in 1989.

"Keith also did a lot of work with the firefighters' charity and, throughout his time in the fire service, raised several thousand pounds for the charity.

"Keith was well known all over the Service, often popping into stations across the county when he was passing and, up until the recent restrictions, regularly popped into Ashby for a drink and a chat.

"In 2007, Keith was awarded the Queen's Long Service and Good Conduct Medal. He Will Be Sadly missed. Rest in Peace FF Bale 1970."
