Ashby drivers planning to head north towards Derby have been warned Swarkestone Bridge is closed to traffic on Sunday morning after a traffic accident.

Derbyshire fire service says that the vehicle involved ended up on its roof,

They also confirmed that, fortunately, nobody was trapped inside.

Fire crew made the vehicle and surrounding area safe.

But drivers were being urged to take an alternative route.

South Derbyshire Safer Neighbourhood Team have said that the bridge was still closed at just after 10am and Ingleby Lane is busy.

From Ashby, the area can be avoided by heading towards Repton from Ticknall and joining the A50 there before carrying on to Derby.

Otherwise, head back towards Melbourne and Castle Donington rather than travelling towards Stanton by Bridge.

The incident will increase calls for a new bridge to be built with drivers currently still having to use the historical structure where they in, in parts, no room for two vehicles to pass.
