A full review of parking arrangements in Ashby is to be carried out following concerns over North West Leicestershire District Council's proposals to alter them.
The District Council made the proposals public last month and suggested the following changes:
- Charges increased in Ashby to be in line with similar charges in neighbouring district and borough councils
- Two hours' free parking in all council car parks across the district (except Ashby) with charges applied after this
- North Street and South Street car parks in Ashby changed to become short-stay
- A new long-stay car park at Money Hill in Ashby, including an electric vehicle charging hub.
District Councillor Kenny Horn and Town Councillor Pejman Zamani have met with Cabinet Members to share their concerns and to agree a workable course of action.
Further to the meeting, Cllr Horn and Cllr Zamani have issued the following joint statement: "On 10th May NWLDC officers released a survey to better understand the parking behaviour in Ashby. Alongside the survey were a series of potential changes to the current parking arrangements. These were possible options put together by officers rather than District Councillors.
"The resulting survey responses demonstrated understandable opposition and concern. Consequently, District Councillor Kenny Horn and Town Councillor Pejman Zamani met with Cabinet Members to share their concerns and to agree a workable course of action."
"Before ANY further recommendations or proposals, colleagues at the Council will conduct a full root and branch review of the parking arrangements in Ashby and engage with local businesses and community representatives to explore and agree the best options to increase footfall and to support the local economy and community."
"Cllrs Horn and Zamani would like to thank the Cabinet and NWLDC staff for their support and understanding in this regard and look forward to working together to improve this wonderful market town yet further."
"The work will be conducted over the coming months and therefore please stay tuned for further updates."
