Ashby councillor calls for access to the town's Memorial you (probably) did not know existed

An Ashby councillor is pushing for access to a war memorial in the town that few people know about.

Ashby town centre has two well-known and prominent memorials - including the Memorial Gardens in Brook Street.

But there is another one - and it is currently out of bounds to the general public.

On the Old Ashbeians Memorial Field off Prior Park Road, there exists another memorial for 44 former Ashby School pupils who were killed during World Wars One and Two.

But the land it is situated one is private and has been used by Ashby School for sports such as rugby and hockey.

Now though, Cllr Kneale wants this little piece of the town's history to be more accessible.

She said: "In my Green Space work before I was a councillor, I had to research the local fields and found out about the Memorial Field.

"That's how I knew about it, and there's more information in the Ashby Museum.

"It came up again when the new Tree Warden was going through each field in turn.

"I think it's important because it'd be nice to get some public access and recognition for what the field is all about.

"Also, at Ashby School, there's a board with all their names on. It'd be nice for more people to be able to see and, maybe next November 11, a wreath could also be laid there in memory of the people who died."

However, it is likely that access to the Memorial is likely to be restricted.

Cllr Kneale added: "The Imperial War Museum seems to think that if it's a registered War Memorial, then it should have public access.

"Whether it is registered or not, that's a bit vague.

"Maybe it's something that, as a community, we should be asking for.

"We also think this pre-dates the memorials in the town centre.

"It's also interesting that a rugby match was played in conjunction with the memorial - Leicester Tigers came here in 1952.

"Maybe some people in the town know more about it and can let us know more at the Town Council."
