An Ashby company has called for Brexit to be delayed due to the difficulties caused by the coronavirus crisis.

In an interview with BBC East Midlands Today, Claire Thompson, Operations Director Of freight management firm MIES, says it is almost impossible to prepare for Brexit while dealing with Covid-19 measures.

The transition period - where the UK remains in both the EU customs union and single market - is due to end on December 31, this year.

She said: "I would like to see Brexit pushed back six months.

"Just to see if things can improve Covid-wise.

"The infrastructure in the UK is kind of on its knees at the moment."

The BBC feature says that the Ivanhoe Business Park company has disputed the normally free flow of goods - with 50 per cent of MIES' exports going to the European Union.

Claire added: "It's a day to day crisis that we're having to go through just to try and cope with the pandemic.

"Then to think about Brexit on top of that is impossible at the moment."

The MIES website says the company's expertise is designed to compliment the successful strategies of businesses engaged in International Trade, by offering practical solutions and training platforms.
