An Ashby group aimed at retired professional and business people seeking social contact is looking for new members.

Ashby Probus Club offers social activities for people with similar backgrounds and interest.

Founded in 1973, the club holds monthly meetings at the Beeches restaurant and hotel in Burton Road.

Members enjoy a chat followed by a pub lunch, which organisers say usually lively conversation 'solving the world's problems'.

Throughout the year a programme of events is arranged by a very active social committee; this includes outings and gentle sports activities, often in conjunction with other Probus clubs, such as bowls and Petanque, as well as general quizzes

In the recent past the club has visited the International Bomber Command Centre in Lincoln, Newark Air Museum and the Triumph motorcycle factory at Hinckley - as well as Foxton Locks on the Grand Union Canal, the National Brewery Centre at Burton on Trent, Sharp's Pottery Museum in Swadlincote, and Manchester Airport Air Traffic Control Centre – which included a private tour of a Concorde aircraft

At the planning stage for this year is a visit to the Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre and a parcel distribution centre.

In addition, the club is holding the President's Summer Lunch as well as an interclub croquet much, a canal walk and a members' night out.

Wives and partners of members are welcome to come along at most of these events

The club maintains a light-hearted atmosphere, smart casual dress code, low-cost and minimal formality.

It welcomes new members and anyone interested can come along to a meeting as a visitor to see what it is about

Further information details and meetings can be obtained by contacting our secretary, Peter Staveley, at [email protected].
