Hill Street in Ashby has been closed to pedestrians and traffic after a large tree fell on to a house.

The thatched cottage property took the full brunt of the tree toppling on to its roof after high winds caused by Storm Franklin hit the area this morning (Monday).

Fire crews from Ashby station cordoned the area off and warned people to stay away.

It is not known if anyone has been injured in the incident.

Ashby Fire Service said: "Firefighters from Ashby station are currently dealing with a large fallen tree into a property.

"Hill Street is currently closed to pedestrians and vehicles."

A spokesman for Leicestershire Police said: "We were called just after 11am, following a request from the fire service for road closures. Officers did attend, however hard closures were put in place by the council and officers have since left."

The clean-up in the wake of strong winds caused by Storm Eunice had only begun across the East Midlands.

But Storm Franklin swept in on Sunday and Monday morning saw more strong winds.

Trees were down, travel was disrupted and attractions were closed on Friday after an amber wind warning was issued.

Some country parks opened late on Saturday while safety inspections took place and minor travel disruption on train services continued.

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for wind for the region and other areas for Sunday afternoon and into Monday.
