Ashby de la Zouch Town Council has received more than 800 applications for tables at this summer's Platinum Jubilee street party.

The Market Street event - planned for June 5 - only has 300 available.

But now council has taken steps to make sure no single address is given more than one table - after multiple applications were made from some households.

Ashby's Town Centre manager, Stuart Benson, told last night's (Monday) meeting of the council's Events & Entertainment Committee that the response from local residents had far outweighed the actual amount of tables on offer.

The event will follow on from street parties held in the town in 2012 and 2016.

This year marks the Queen's 70th anniversary and a four-day Bank Holiday Platinum Jubilee weekend will take place from June 2-5.

A register of interest form had to be filled out with names will drawn out of a tombola next month to see who the lucky winners are.

But councillors raised concerns that more than one person per household had entered.

The Town Centre manager told councillors: "We had more than 800 people applying for the 300 spaces available.

"You could say we were over-subscribed.

"The computerised draw will be made on April 4, it will automatically choose the winners from the 800 people. The winners will be informed a week later.

"However, some households have put more than one entry in.

"But there are parameters we can feed in to the software to make it one winner chosen per address."

Councillors suggested it would be unfair to allocate more than one table to a single household.

The committee heard there would not be any scope to increase the amount of tables to try and meet some of the demand.

The event is due to last from 12noon-3pm and is planned for the whole length of Market Street.

All local care homes in the Ashby area will be offered a free table plus the volunteers and Rotary Club.members.
