Ashby to hold a town centre street party to celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee
Ashby will be hosting a party in Market Street to celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee next year.
The event is scheduled to be held on June 5 and will follow on from street parties held in the town in 2012 and 2016.
The Queen has reigned longer than any other British monarch since her accession to the throne in 1952.
Next year marks the 70th anniversary and a four-day Bank Holiday Platinum Jubilee weekend will take place from June 2-5.
Ashby de la Zouch Town Council's Events & Entertainment Committee discussed the plans at its meeting last night (Monday).
The council says a register of interest form will be required to be filled out and then names will be drawn out of a tombola to see who the lucky winners are.
Further details will are set to be released later in the year.
But the event will echo the previous street parties in Market Street, with photographs of the 2012 version featuring heavily in the national press.
Last night, councillors were presented with plans for the event by Ashby's Town Centre Manager Stuart Benson.
It was decided that drawing out names of people who will be able to attend was a better system than the 'first come, first served' method which has been used previously.
The event is set to have a budget of around £10,000, but it was pointed out that the publicity gained nationally from previous street parties was publicity that 'you cannot buy' with a view to encouraging visitors to the town.
It is planned to have tables of six people with musical acts, entertainment, children's rides and hot food vendors on the day.
Union Jacks will be put up to decorate the town and local businesses will be encouraged to have a red, white and blue themed window display.
Councillors were also told that the returning Fake Festival is due to be held the previous day - and that organisers have been asked to book a Queen tribute as the headline act.
