Amanda Hack MP reacts to Starmer's step-down
By Grace Kennington 22nd Jun 2026
Following Kier Starmer's speech this morning announcing he will be stepping down as prime minister and leader of the Labour party, Labour MP for North West Leicestershire Amanda Hack has published her response to the news.
In a statement published both to social media and her official website, Amanda Hack said: 'In the first four years of his six-year leadership of the Labour Party, he restored stability, rebuilt the party and made it fit for government.
'Over the last two years as Prime Minister, he has bought stability back to the economy and laid the foundations for the renewal of out country and its public services.'
The statement goes on to identify successes under Starmer's leadership, saying: 'important progress has been made on strengthening the economy, boosting workers' and renters' rights, lifting children out of poverty, and bringing down both net migration and small boats crossings.
'The comes alongside significant progress on the pensions of over 2,200 former miners in the Mineworkers Pension Scheme and the British Staff Superannuation Scheme, already returning more than £6 million a year to local people, with further work still to do.'
'At the same time,' Hack continues, 'the message at the ballot box has been clear, people are impatient for change, and we must go further and move faster.'
Hack then outlines what this period of change will look like for her constituents, saying she will continue to make residents in North West Leicestershire her top priority.
'The number one issues that you raise with me on doorsteps,' said Hack, 'if tackling NHS waiting lists and access to GP services. I will continue working to improve access and ensure everyone can get the care they need, when they need it.
'That's alongside continuing to work hard to reinstate passenger rail to our area, championing life-saving defibrillators and CPR training, fighting for access to banking services, battling for better buses, and making sure we see our fair share of the extra cash to fix our roads.
'Whoever becomes the next Prime Minister, I will continue making the case for North West Leicestershire and working to deliver the best possible outcome for our area. As always, if you need support from my office, please do not hesitate to get in touch.'
