A42 areas near Ashby and Measham highlighted as fast-food litter 'hot-spots' - after clean-up collects thousands of tonnes of rubbish

More than 54,000 tonnes of litter have been collected after a six-week clean-up of the A42 from Measham to Ashby to Castle Donington.

And two areas near Measham and Ashby have been highlighted as fast-food rubbish hot-spots.

North West Leicestershire District Council reported the results of the annual operation along a 20-mile stretch of the main dual carriageway through the area, which links the West and East Midlands.

Council officials say the results of the litter pick show how much thoughtless drivers are prepared to thrown litter out of the window.

The council also says that Junctions 11, near Ashby, and Junction 13, for Measham and Appleby, are bad for 'fast food litter'.

Both junctions have service areas with takeaway outlets on both sites.

The council posted the results of the litter pick online today (Friday) and said: "After six long weeks, our team have finished their annual litter pick of the A42.

"They've been out every weekend in all weathers to complete this gruelling task.

  • Over 54 tonnes of litter collected
  • 32km of road picked and swept by eight members of staff
  • Over 1000 black bags filled

"There would be no need for this work if everyone took their litter home with them.

"Junctions 11, 13 and 23a are really bad for fast food litter.

"You can help us to tackle this issue by reporting littering HERE if you see it.

"Thank you to the team and to all volunteer litter wombles who work tirelessly to keep our district clean and green."
