A new development of 190 homes near a Leicestershire village could be given the go-ahead despite fears it could be "catastrophic" for a nearby business.

The new homes are set to be built on land off Beveridge Lane next to Ellistown, near Coalville, as part of the wider South East Coalville development, which will see more than 2016 houses built after being approved in 2016,

It was split into two separate developments, Hugglescote Grange and Swinfen Vale, with the 190-home plan being based in Swinfen Vale.

The South East Coalville development is expected to span over a 440-acre site and include a primary school and a local centre.

The Beveridge Lane development, submitted to North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC), was originally for 105 homes when submitted by the developer Harworth Group; however, it has since been taken over by housebuilder Honey, who wants to build another 85 homes on the 14.5-acre site.

It will consist of a mix of two-, three-, four-, and five-bedroom homes and will cost around £54.7m.

Leicestershire County Council highways officers originally raised concerns about speed controls for one of the proposed streets, as well as the potential for bin lorries to pass extremely close to kerbs, with vehicles overrunning footways.

However, housebuilder Honey has since submitted new plans to address these concerns.

Honey chief executive Mark Mitchell said: "We hope [Beveridge Lane] will be our first development in Leicestershire as we continue to expand throughout the East Midlands.

"We have experienced strong demand for our homes at our five live developments in the region and are excited by the opportunity to start delivering our high specification homes for sale in Coalville."

However, there are also concerns from one unnamed business owner, operating a nearby transport company, who fears the proposed development could be "catastrophic".

In a statement against the development, they said: "Due to the nature of our business, we operate on a 24/7 basis serving both the local council as well as national and international businesses.

"Whilst I appreciate that North West Leicestershire District Council has a housing target to meet, surely the Ellistown, Bagworth and Battram areas have had more than their fair share of commercial and housing development.

"As a transport company, we are very limited as to where we can go, as there never seems to be any purpose-built developments which suit the industry's needs".

North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC) has yet to approve or reject the plans, but building could start in early 2027.
