DO you to whip up a wickedly good treat for your furry friend? Here's a super simple recipe for Pumpkin Howl-o-ween Dog Biscuits:

Ingredients:

One cup plain, cooked pumpkin puree (not spiced!)

Two eggs

Two and a half cups whole wheat flour (or a dog-safe alternative like rice flour)

Half a teaspoon cinnamon (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your cauldron (oven) to 180°C (350°F).
  2. Mix the pumpkin puree and eggs together until smooth
  3. Slowly add the flour (and cinnamon if you dare) until it forms a dough.
  4. Roll out the dough to about half an inch thickness and use spooky cookie cutters (or regular ones!) to create fun shapes.
  5. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until the treats are nice and firm
  6. Let cool before serving and watch those tails wag!

Fun Activities with Pumpkins

In addition to their health benefits, pumpkins can be the centre of some fun, dog-friendly Halloween activities:

  1. Pumpkin Carving for Dogs: While you're carving your Jack-o'-lantern, set aside the pumpkin flesh for your dog. Once your carving masterpiece is done, let your dog explore the pumpkin's scent and texture. Just ensure the seeds and skin are removed.
  2. Pumpkin Trails: Take your dog on a pumpkin-filled adventure through your local trails. Many parks and farms host dog-friendly pumpkin patches or decorated trails during the Halloween season. These can be a great way to keep your dog active while soaking in the festive atmosphere.
  3. Pumpkin Treat Puzzle: For a brain-boosting activity, fill a hollowed-out mini pumpkin with your dog's favourite kibble or treats and let them figure out how to get them out. It's a fun challenge that encourages problem-solving!

Halloween Safety Tips

While pumpkins are generally safe, Halloween comes with other potential hazards for dogs. Keep tips in mind for a safe and spooky season:

• Keep sweets out of reach: Chocolate, especially dark chocolate, is highly toxic to dogs. Always store Halloween candy safely where your dog can't access it.

• Avoid candles in pumpkins: Opt for battery-operated lights instead of candles to avoid accidental burns or fires if your dog bumps into your Jack-o'-lantern.

• Watch for costume stress: If you're dressing your dog up for Halloween, make sure their costume isn't restrictive and that they can move freely. Some dogs may feel uncomfortable or anxious, so watch their body language closely.

By keeping these tips in mind, you and your dog can enjoy a festive and safe Halloween together!
