Ashby de la Zouch Town Council wants to create a 'Womble hub' for the area's litter pickers.

Monday's meeting of the Parks & Cemetery Committee pledged support to North West Leicestershire wombles get county council backing

"We have a lovely group of people who go around picking up after those who drop stuff all over the place," said committee chairman Roger Bayliss.

"But the county council is making funds available and it might be worth pointing people in the right direction if we can."

Leader of Ashby de la Zouch Town Council, John Coxon, added: "I don't know if we could perhaps form some sort of hub for 'wombles' in Ashby.

"If we can get the equipment from the county, we could perhaps keep it in Ashby then dish it out to litter pickers when they need it.

"They could then bring it back. It might be useful, with long pickers, for example, to get letter out of hedges, plus they have folding signs that can be placed at the side of the road to warn motorists about what's happening in front of them."

Cllr Geraint Jones added: "I just wanted to say what a great job the wombles are doing and we ought to convey our thanks to them."

The committee agreed to approach the county council to see if some equipment could be supplied for Ashby litter pickers to use.

Cllr Bayliss added: "We would be acting as the conduit, we have to connect the two things, the doing it and the supplying of the hardware."
