'Iconic' Rolls Royce once owned by Ashby man and star of TV series sells for over £60,000 at auction

A vintage Rolls Royce which featured in the 90s verision of the TV series the Darling Buds of May - and once belonged to an Ashby man - has sold for more than £60,000 at auction.

The car, a 20hp Park Ward Larlette finished in yellow, was used in the show which starred David Jason between 1991 and 1993.

But, in 1955, the car was sold to a Richard Edward Derington-Fenning of the Royal Hotel, in Ashby, and he kept it for 38 years.

That would have been the owner when the registration ‘RA 333’ would become arguably the most famous 20hp in existence thanks to its role in the TV series.

We told you last month that the vehicle was up for auction Rolls Royce once owned by Ashby man could fetch £70,000.

Now, the Express reports that it sold for £63,000 at a Duxford auction where over £2.7million worth of classic car sales were made at the Cambridgeshire venue.

The H&H Classic company said that the model was “one of the most beloved UK film car characters ever”.
and added it become an “icon” of the show, with die-cast models sold after the show was initially aired.

A spokesman for H&H Classic said: “Pop Larkin’s (David Jason) beloved Rolls-Royce 20hp Park Ward Laundalette that starred in ITV’s ‘The Darling Buds of May’ made £63,000 at the H&H sale in Duxford.

“Arguably one of the most beloved UK film car characters ever, this 1926 vehicle of dreams for Mom and Pop Larkin was purchased by its current keeper in 2019 for £100,000, and its previous keeper beforehand for the same sum.

“It was offered for sale with an MOT certificate valid until May 5, 2022.

“The Darling Buds of May was a television series produced for the ITV network by Yorkshire TV and first broadcast between 1991 and 1993.

The interior is a on a different level

“The first six episodes of Series One and the first two of Series Two are adaptations of the 1958 novel of the same name by renowned author H.E. Bates.."

Extensive research by H&H shows the car was supplied new on August 20, 1926 to an F.R Claye Esq.
