Sunday 5th May

Free Museum Open Day and Cellar Bar at the Sir John Moore Foundation Museum near Ashby de la Zouch

Ever wondered what lies behind the round window? The Sir John Moore Museum shows what life was like at this school in 1891, with a classroom, Headmaster's study, and a dormitory. Find out about the incredible history of this fascinating building - and all the research that is currently being undertaken, from the part the school played in the early Industrial Revolution, to the pupils who left their marks permanently on the walls of the Hall.

Designed by Wren, the building was opened as a free school in 1697. Unusual for its time, it went on to become even more unusual, because it operated a free school and a fee-paying school from the same building! Past pupils include an England footballer, Richard Arkwright's grandchildren, and members of parliament.

Have a picnic on the lawn, and a pint in the Cellar Bar.
