Work to alter 'unsafe' Money Hill roundabout on Ashby by-pass could start in the new year
Ashby de la Zouch Town Council says steps have been taken to make sure alterations are made to the 'not safe' Money Hill roundabout on the A511 bypass.
The council's planning committee meeting, on Monday, heard that work could begin on it in the new year.
The roundabout has been designed to provide access to the new housing development - but a number of motorists have raised concerns about it.
One social media comment described it as the 'loop of stupidity' as being in the wrong lane can take you into the road leading to an area where houses have yet to be built.
Coming from the Tesco/Nottingham Road direction, the filter lane on the left is not indicated until drivers realise they have to change lanes to carry on towards Burton.
Motorists coming from Smisby Road have to change to the left-hand lane if they want to carry straight on - and then face traffic coming from the right which merges in with fast-moving vehicles.
The planning committee was given an update from the Money Hill Steering Group.
Committee chair, Cllr Tom Stanley, told councillors: "We've been in contact with the developers, they've promised us that they've come up with a plan of what they want to do.
"They're waiting for the County Council to sign it off and the work will start early next year.
"We'll keep chasing it. Because, unless we get some change, a lot of residents in the town are concerned that that is not a safe roundabout.
"It wasn't built or designed correctly."
Cllr Stanley added later: "The developers are aware that, as a Town Council, we want signage from a longer distance on approach southbound from Tesco and also a longer more obvious filter lane to stop the late lane changes that currently happen on that roundabout."
In March, spokesperson for the consortium partners, Bloor Homes and Taylor Wimpey told Ashby Nub News: "The junction design has been approved by Leicestershire County Council and the works have been inspected and approved.
"We are aware of the local residents' concerns regarding the new junction on the A511 and recently requested a full junction road safety audit.
"We are working closely with Leicestershire County Council Highways in assessing the matter and once we have received the outcome of audit, we will make the required alterations."
