Residents along Smisby Road in Ashby said they have 'never experienced a storm like it' after the town was hit by flash flooding on Monday evening.

A thunderstorm was accompanied by torrential rain and hailstones following a weekend of humid conditions.

But the intensity of the storms came as a shock to most people, with water getting into at least some properties and threatening others.

Tesco supermarket issued a statement to Ashby Nub News after the bad weather forced the store to close for a short while.

A Tesco spokesperson said: "Our Ashby De La Zouch Extra store is open as normal after a brief closure last night (Monday), due to a power cut caused by the local storm.

"Thank you to our maintenance team for working hard to ensure the store could re-open swiftly. We apologise for any inconvenience caused."

The B&M store in Ashby is also thought to have been affected by the storms.

One resident in Smisby Road showed us photos of their property where water had got into the cellar - and conditions were made worse by passing cars washing the deep water towards the houses.

Kathryn Ramsell said that the flood water near the shop on Smisby Road had no where to escape.

She added: "When the cars passed through the water it was causing a wave of water, which escaped down our driveway.

"One property had water in the house, and the other was minutes away.

"The flood water did however manage to get, with both garages and cellars flooded.

"Generally the drains take the water away, but this was so extreme that it couldn't cope.

"I don't think you can blame the drainage system, we've only been here a year but our neighbours say they hadn't seen rain like it before.

"One of them had water in the house as the door was just that little bit lower. The local residents were helping to get it out again.

"But we had about five inches of water in the cellar and it had to be pumped out."

Social media clips also showed the intensity of the storm as it hit North Street in Ashby.
