A large crowd paid their respects at Ashby's Armistice Day commemoration at the War Memorial in Market Street.

The short service was conduced by Andy Smith, of St Helen's Church in Ashby, and attended by the Mayor of Ashby, Cllr Rita Manning, along with representatives of the Royal British Legion, which celebrates its centenary this year.

A number of wreaths were laid, including those from local schools and sports clubs.

Market Street was closed off between Derby Road and Brook Street by Ashby de la Zouch Town Council, so that the service could take place.

Two minutes' silence was impeccably observed at 11am by those attended the ceremony, along with many people up and down Market Street.

Armistice Day is commemorated every year on November 11 to mark the armistice signed between the Allies of World War I and Germany at Compiegne, France, at 5:45 am for the cessation of hostilities on the Western Front of World War I, which took effect at 11 in the morning—the "eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month" of 1918.
