Ashby Pride organisers say they are 'shocked and saddened' by an assault which left three women in hospital last month.

They described the incident as a 'homophobic attack' and are appealing for any witnesses to contact Leicestershire Police.

The assault, reported to have been committed by two women, took place in Market Street in the early hours of Good Friday (March 29).

A spokesperson for Leicestershire Police told Ashby Nub News: "Police were called to Market Street in Ashby at around 1.20am on Good Friday following a report three women had been assaulted by two other women.

"It was reported that the suspects had left the area prior to emergency services arriving.

"None of the victims suffered injuries that were life-threatening.

"Enquiries into the incident are continuing and no arrests have been made at this time."

Ashby Pride strongly condemned the attack on social media yesterday (Sunday).

A statement reads: "Everyone at Ashby Pride is utterly shocked and saddened by the homophobic attack that took place in the early hours of Good Friday leaving three people requiring hospital treatment.

"Such acts of hate and violence within our town against members of the LGBTQ+ community, or any community, have no place in our society.

"Everyone should be free to enjoy our fantastic nightlife without fear of violence just because of their sexuality.

"We are in contact with and offering our support for the victims of this disgusting attack in any way we can.

"We would ask people not to speculate online and respect the privacy of the victims at this very distressing time.

"Ashby Pride would encourage anyone who witnessed the attack to contact Leicestershire Police immediately to ensure that swift and strong action is taken against the perpetrators.

"Attacks of this nature demonstrate why events and groups such as Ashby Pride are still so important, to stand with our community in solidarity to prevent further attacks of this nature in the future, making our wonderful town and a safe place, not just for the LGBTQ+ community, but for everyone."
