North West Leicestershire recorded a total of 52 deaths linked to Coronavirus during a two-week period between March and May, according to the latest data.

Sadly, there were 34 deaths in hospital, 13 in care homes and five at home.

But none were recorded in hospices or other settings.

And it is Charnwood where the largest number of deaths occurred with 76, compared to Melton with the lowest number, 20.

The data available details deaths recorded between March 16 and May 10.

There were more deaths in county and city care homes than hospitals during one week in May, latest figures have revealed.

More than half of the recorded deaths between May 4 and May 10 were in care homes, with 41 per cent in hospitals during the same timeframe.

Stats that will go before the health scrutiny commission at County Hall this week show when and where the first 555 deaths occurred in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.

But a report accompanying the dashboard of figures reveals that admissions were lower than expected by health chiefs.

The report details that - at the peak –  there were 204 coronavirus patients in Leicester's Hospitals.

It states: "At the time of writing Leicestershire has had a lower rate of deaths per 100,000 population than in many areas of the country, with the exception of parts of the south-west which have experienced the lowest rates.

"Admissions and discharges have been generally lower than were initially predicted at University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust (UHL) and UHL has been able to operate within ventilator capacity.

"There has been an average of around 140 patients at UHL at the time of writing, down from a peak of 204."

The data available details deaths recorded between March 16 and May 10.

Graphs show that the peak in cases occurred in recording week 15 – April 6-12 when death rates rocketed to more than 70 from just over 40 in the previous week.

Fatalities remained between the high 50s and low 60s for the following two weeks before dropping back to around 50 a week at the end of April.

As hospital deaths gradually decreased, the number of deaths occurring in care homes shot up to 54 per cent in the second week of May.

The breakdown shows that 349 Leicestershire residents have died with coronavirus, 196 Leicester residents have died after a positive test and 10 people from Rutland have passed away after being confirmed as having coronavirus.
