Tesco - with a store in Ashby - has introduced buying limits on some products including eggs, rice, soap and toilet roll.

In an email to customers, the move is to make sure all customers have access to products.

The French border controls caused by increased coronavirus cases in the UK have sparked a rush to buy in some stores.

Now customers are allowed to buy up to three of each item.

But the pandemic has also prompted Tesco to assure shoppers it is safe to enter its stores.

The supermarket giant has also encouraged customers to shop alone to ensure social distancing in stores.

It said it has "good stock levels" and customers should "shop as you normally would."

Tesco introduced limits on some products in September in a bid to prevent a repeat of the panic-buying that led to shortages in March.

A Tesco statement said: "We have strict social distancing measures in our stores to keep our colleagues and customers safe, and we have plenty of food available to suit your needs at Christmas.

"We've been building our stockholding of key products ahead of the Christmas peak and are working closely with our hauliers and suppliers to continue the supply of goods into our stores.

"We're doing everything we can to limit the impact for our customers."

The supermarket giant is looking at using ferries direct from Spain and increasing stock from the UK to deal with the disruption, according to The Mirror
