The Major of Ashby, Cllr Damilola Ojuri, has announced a new original musical about Ashby's rich heritage and industrial past will debut at Holy Trinity Church this March.

The Silver Spade is 'more than just a performance,' said the Mayor, 'it is a living, breathing tribute to the soul and heritage of Ashby de la Zouch.'

Featuring all original songs performed by Calling Time and the Roots Community Singers, the musical tells Ashby's story from humble cottage industries to the proliferation of factories and mines in the area.

Written with guidance and historical insight from Ashby Museum, the production examines the key moments in history that have shaped Ashby into the town we know today.

According to the Mayor, 'this production honours our past with authenticity, care, and deep respect. It is not just a retelling of history, but a heartfelt celebration of the people and stories that live on in the very fabric of our community.

'This moment means so much to me personally. It feels like a powerful and timely opportunity to shine a light on our town's remarkable story as we look ahead to the UK Town of Culture competition.

'I feel an overwhelming sense of pride to be part of something that recognises the history of Ashby and inspires where we are going as a town.

'What makes this evening even more meaningful is that all proceeds will go to support InspireYouth Collective and the Rotary Club of Ashby Castle, two organisations dedicated to strengthening our community and investing in its future.

'In honouring our past, we are also helping to uplift the next generation.

'This is more than an evening of music - it is a celebration of identity, belonging, and the enduring heart of our town.'

The Silver Spade will be performed at Holy Trinity Church on Saturday 14 March at 7pm.

Tickets are now on sale from Ticketsource, costing £15 for adults and £9 for children.
