A car crashed and hit a 15-year-old girl pedestrian in Ashby town centre on Wednesday evening.

The woman driver had to be freed from her vehicle after being trapped following the incident.

Both the woman and the girl were taken to hospital and the roads around the town centre were cordoned off by police for around two hours.

Police, fire and ambulance services were called to the incident which occurred on the mini-roundabout at the junction of Market Street and Derby Road and involved one vehicle.

The police say neither the woman nor the girl are believed to have suffered life-threatening or life-changing injuries.

A spokeswoman for Leicestershire Police said: "Officers were called at 6.19pm today (Wednesday) to a report of a collision involving a car and a pedestrian in Market Street, Ashby.

"East Midlands Ambulance Service and Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service were also in attendance.

"A woman, who was driving the car, and the pedestrian, a 15-year-old girl, were both taken to hospital.

"Their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening or life-changing.

"Road closures were in place in the area of Market Street and Bath Street. The roads have since been reopened."

The area was cordoned off by police while the driver was freed and then treated by the ambulance service.

Fire crews from Ashby and Coalville were called out to the incident and the routes around Derby Road, Bath Street and Market Street were closed off.

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service released details on their website which said: "Call from the Police to a one vehicle Road Traffic Collision with one person trapped.

"The casualty was extricated from the vehicle by the Fire Service and left in the care of East Midlands Ambulance Service."
