North West Leicestershire District Council has announced a series of measures that will be in place during the World Cup this summer to increase protections in place in Ashby and surrounding towns.

One measure that will be introduced is Street Wardens, which will be placed in Ashby's pubs and clubs. These wardens will maintain direct communication with the district council's CCTV team, which will be actively monitoring the town centre to provide real-time surveillance and help ensure a safe and well-managed night-time environment.

There will also be a knife arch - a walk through metal detector - deployed at various undisclosed locations throughout the World Cup tournament to prevent and deter knife crime.

NWLDC will also be providing anti-spiking equipment for bottles and glasses that will be available for people to collect from participating licensed venues. There will be drink spiking test kits available at bars.

Licensed taxis will undergo spot checks to ensure customer safety, as well as Security Industry Authority (SIA) inspections will be carried out by officers to check the credentials and behaviour of door security staff across the district.

25 medical staff will also be present at different venues to provide emergency care.

Additionally, Leicestershire Police will be carrying out roadside breath tests to ensure safety on the roads.

Councillor Michael Wyatt, Chair of the Safer North West Leicestershire Partnership, said: 'It is important that everyone in North West Leicestershire is safe whilst watching the World Cup football tournament.

'I urge everybody to plan their nights ahead, books taxis home in advance, stay with your friends and be aware of the schemes that are on offer such as Ask Angela and the Keep Safe Places.

'We take public safety seriously and we will be working hard to protect North West Leicestershire's residents, communities and businesses.'
