St Helen's Church in Ashby has come with a number of ideas to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of VE Day - and urged people to join them online this Sunday.

The current coronavirus restrictions mean the town's events have all had to be cancelled.

That includes the art and craft events in the Heritage Centre and Ashby's civic service at St Helen's Church on Sunday morning.

But the church is still keen to see Ashby people mark the occasions.

They say: "Why not make some Great British Bunting as suggested by BBC Make a Difference.

"Go to the Heritage  page of the St Helen's Website and a template for bunting is under 'Craft activities'  -  string it up outside your house and turn the town red, white and blue.

"Or, why not have a picnic in your front garden under your bunting on VE Day 75? You could have spam sandwiches for a 1940s feel.

"Why not end your picnic with a toast at 3pm? The suggested words are 'To those who gave so much – we thank you'.

"And join us on Sunday, May 10, on Facebook Live at 10.30am for a service to mark VE Day 75 - to think about our own responses to war, and our own responsibility in securing and keeping peace."
