Specsavers Ashby De La Zouch recently visited Albert Village Community Primary School to deliver free children's eye screening for pupils across all year groups, supporting early detection of vision problems and improving children's eye health in the local community.
The visit marks the launch of a new school vision screening pathway Specsavers Ashby De La Zouch offer, designed to help identify potential eye conditions at an early stage. With one in four children in the UK having never had a sight test, early vision screening is essential—particularly for time-sensitive conditions such as amblyopia (lazy eye), where early treatment can significantly improve outcomes.
The experienced and GOC-registered optometrists from Specsavers Ashby De La Zouch provided free eye screening appointments during school hours, conducted on the school premises. The screening checks included:
- Visual acuity testing
- Eye movement assessments
- Colour vision checks
These checks help determine whether a child would benefit from a full eye examination and highlight the urgency of any further assessments if needed.

At the end of the screening programme, parents received a written report detailing the results, along with clear recommendations on whether any concerns were identified or if additional eye tests were advised.
This approach helps parents make informed decisions about their child's eye care and supports early intervention where necessary.
Kuljinder Singh Bains, Optometrist Director at Specsavers Ashby De La Zouch, said:
"One in four children have never had an eye test, and conditions like amblyopia can be missed without early screening.
Cheryl Lott, Headteacher at Albert Village Community Primary School, added:
"We were pleased to welcome Specsavers Ashby De La Zouch into our school.
This school screening initiative highlights the importance of regular children's eye tests and demonstrates how local healthcare providers can work with schools to improve children's vision, learning, and overall wellbeing.
Specsavers Ashby De La Zouch looks forward to continuing its work with local schools to raise awareness of children's eye health and ensure early access to professional eye care.
