The Ashby Soapbox Derby returns this Sunday

Ashby BID is staging the event once more following the success of last year's derby which attracted thousands to the town centre.

Not only did it provide a unique spectacle, it also encouraged people to use town centre businesses.

Ashby BID announced this year's derby on social media and said: "Rev Your Engines! The Ashby Soapbox Derby 2025 is here!

"Get ready to experience the thrill of a lifetime. Whether you're racing to victory, dazzling the crowd with your creativity, or cheering from the sidelines, this action-packed event promises excitement for all."

The Moira Canal Festival is also back this weekend - on Saturday and Sunday.

This is a family event held every year on the restored section of the Ashby Canal, at the historic Moira Furnace Museum. It aims to raise awareness of, and money for, the restoration, extension and maintenance of the Ashby Canal.

The Ashby Canal is being restored from its current terminus at Snarestone to Moira, Leicestershire. This major project will ultimately reconnect Measham, Oakthorpe, Donisthorpe and Moira to the national waterways network, and provide a green gateway to the Heart of the National Forest.

This year's event includes classic cars, boats, children's activities, traders, charities, catering and bar areas, as well as entertainment including The D-Day Darlings, D-Day Juniors and much more.

Conkers has two tribute acts playing live on Saturday - one celebrating David Bowie, the other, Dire Straits.

Jean Genie was created by John Mainwaring and John Ford in 1993. An original recording artist in his own right, John Mainwaring has been signed by numerous record companies throughout his career – twice with Warner Bros. In the 1980s David Bowie's world famous producer Tony Visconti produced some of John's songs when he was signed to WEA.

As well as performing as David Bowie in Jean Genie, John is currently signed to Bucks Music Publishers. His latest achievements have been writing three songs for Tony Christie's million-selling album 'The Definitive Collection', plus numerous theme tunes for BBC radio.

Money for Nothing have performed all over the world, and have studied Dire Straits in great depth in order to be as close as possible to the real thing. Fronting the band is the brilliant guitarist and "Mark Knopfler sound-alike", Aled Williams, and behind him, the line-up features top-class and experienced musicians. The result is a performance that makes Money For Nothing a "must see" for any rock enthusiast or Dire Straits fan.
