It has been described as the best Sunday roast in Ashby town centre - so we decided to try it for ourselves.

Twelve, at 12 Bath Street, has been fully refurbished and offers a welcoming, relaxed atmosphere.

You can choose to eat in the bar area, or in the more secluded restaurant, which offers a little more privacy.

Either offers the same, up-market surroundings and allows you to take your time over your meal and drinks - and the chance to catch up with your friends.

Children, with adults, are also welcome at Twelve, meaning it is an ideal place for family gatherings.

The interior decor has been tastefully done, with modern wallpaper, seating and nicely placed plants all courtesy of a London-based design company.

All of which adds up to a first-class gastro-dining experience. So, what about the food?

I went for the roast beef - from the Sunday roast menu. You can also choose from pork, lamb and chicken.

It is beautifully presented, with the beef on a bed of roast potatoes, with a Yorkshire pudding the size of a cricket ball. Side orders of cabbage and cauliflower - with a gravy boat - complete the meal.

The meal was fantastic, not too much, and just enough so that you know you have had a hearty Sunday lunch.

This will set you back £21, which is a reasonable price to pay to eat in such laid-back, casual dining surroundings. Also, all of the food is locally sourced in the East Midlands.

The owners have given the venue a more exclusive, eclectic feel. But they also want to make room for the good, old-fashioned Sunday lunch experience. 

New menus were also launched this week, and there is also a lunchtime offer of one course for £12 and three courses for £20.

Twelve is designed so that you can feel comfortable wherever you sit, be it at the bar, in the restaurant or, with the warmer days here, outside on the terrace.

The venue is also busy on Fridays and Saturdays with people coming out simply for a drink - and to sample its wide range of cocktails.

But no detail has been left untouched. Previous complaints about the stairs to the toilets being too steep were addressed and now have been made more accessible.
