The English Civil War-themed Sealed Knot Society is planning a return to Ashby de la Zouch.

Monday's meeting of Ashby de la Zouch Town Council's Finance & Events Committee was told that the oldest re-enactment society in the UK has made it known they want to come back to the town.

Sealed Knot last visited Ashby in 2018 - and before that, they were here in 1995.

Details have still to be confirmed, but the Town Council has agreed that the event should take place in principle.

While it is expected to take place next year, a date has yet to be decided.

The last Sealed Knot visit to Ashby attracted thousands to the Bath Grounds, with the town's rugby club used as a base for the event.

Sealed Knot says it brings history to life by staging events throughout the country all year round, offering a chance to experience, at first hand, the horrors of a nation at war with itself, as well as providing a glimpse of everyday life in those days.

It adds the aims of the Society are not to glorify war, but to honour those that died in the many battles of the English Civil War, to educate the public about those wars, and also about the lives and times of people in that period.

The name of the Society derives from a group, which, during the Protectorate, plotted for the restoration of the monarchy.
