North West Leicestershire MP Andrew Bridgen visited St Charles Primary School in Measham and found the pupils were fully up to date on climate issues - and have even written to Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

Mr Bridgen spoke to the children about climate change, which they have been learning about as part of their studies.

And the school's older pupils have written a letter to the Prime Minister asking him how he intended to address climate issues and follow the Paris Agreement.

Last week, the children swam in a pool full of rubbish at Hood Park Leisure Centre in Ashby to experience what it is like for sealife in oceans where plastic pollution is a major problem.

Deputy Headteacher Felicity Knight said that the children were interested in what Mr Bridgen had to say as it reflected their own studies and concerns for the future.

The school are now planning a visit to the Houses of Parliament at the invitation of the Conservative MP.

"Mr Bridgen also visited the older children that had written to Boris Johnson," said Mrs Knight.

"The Year Six children, the oldest class we've got here, they had written to the Prime Minister and wanted his response on what he had done and what the Government are doing about climate action.

"They have also learned about the Paris Agreement and wanted to know how Boris Johnson is fulfilling that.

"Mr Bridgen spoke to the class that swam in the plastic pool, they shared that experience with him, and he was very knowledgable with his facts.

"He taught them a lot of fact about a mass of waste the size of France being found in one of the oceans.

"They found that fascinating but utterly disgusting at the same time."

Mr Bridgen spent around an hour at the school on Friday,

"He also did a question and answer session about his work in parliament," added Mrs Knight.

"He also visited the little children in Class One and they were telling him about what they had learned about polar bears. It was a really nice visit around the school.

"And he also offered to take the school on a tour of the Houses of Parliament as well, we are currently trying to sort that out in the summer term."
