Royal Hotel remains on Historic England's 'At Risk' list - but renewed planning application for redevelopment is recognised
Ashby's Royal Hotel remains on Historic England's 'At Risk' register - despite plans to recevelop the area around the Grade II* listed building.
The Royal appeared on the list last year but a renewed planning application by the hotel's owners aims to restore it in among a development of 17 town houses.
Those plans are before North West Leicestershire District Planners at the moment - although Ashby de la Zouch Town Council has raised a number of concerns it has requested tol be addressed.
Historic England recognises the new plans - but echoes the reasons it has for keeping it on the 'At Risk' list.
It says: "Hotel built c.1826 and constructed of red brick and stone. Large porch with Greek Doric columns where the fluting has been removed.
"Since the hotel closed in 2018 the building has been vacant and has suffered from heritage crime.
"The roofs and rainwater disposal system require renewal.
"Delamination of stone 'slips' to elevations. Internally there is defective plaster work and failing ceilings as a result of water ingress and stolen pipework.
"The building owners commissioned a condition report in 2020.
There is a live planning application on the site for a large amount of new development."
