It is looking like a fire at the Swadlincote exchange is affecting a number of phone and broadband services in the town, and surrounding exchanges whose broadband services make use of the exchange.

The thinkbroadband.com website reports that a fire at the Swadlincote exchange affected both phone and broadband services.

But they had been restored by the early hours of today (Sunday).

BT sent out at statement at 11.45pm on Saturday.

It read: "Following a fire at our Swadlincote exchange on Saturday evening, some landline and broadband services in the town and surrounding areas may be disrupted.

"The fire was quickly extinguished and no one was injured.

"Engineers are at the exchange and are working hard to reconnect services as soon as possible.

"Mobile phones are not affected and calls to 999 can be made from any mobile phone. We're sorry for any inconvenience."

That was followed by an update this morning from a BT Group spokesperson.

It says: "An update to say that services have been restored arrived around 1am on Sunday morning.

"Following a fire at the Swadlincote exchange on Saturday evening, some landline and broadband connections in the town and surrounding areas were disrupted.

"Engineers restored services by 1am on Sunday morning. The cause of the fire, which was quickly extinguished by Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service, is being investigated. We're sorry for any inconvenience.

"We can see some people complaining that their EE mobile service was down during the affected period, and while that may have been the case, emergency 999 calls will work on any network that the phone can see irrespective of who your call plan is with."
