JD Wetherspoon in Ashby is planning a refurb to improve facilities for its staff.

A planning application has been made to North West Leicestershire District Council under the pub's traditional name of the Shoulder of Mutton - and says a new air conditioning system is also part of the scheme.

Plans show the work will take place on the second floor of the Grade II listed building and the appearance of the building will not be affected.

A planning and design statement accompanying the planning application says: "We propose to renovate the second floor of 'The Shoulder of Mutton, Ashby-De-La-Zouch' to enhance staff facilities.

"The renovation will include the creation of a new staff room, as well as upgrading the existing staff room and staff WC to create new staff changing and toilet facilities.

"This will involve the capping of an existing staircase at second-floor level, the removal of two doors, the removal of existing partition walls, and the introduction of a new layout to optimise the use of space.

"Additionally, we will be installing a new air conditioning unit, along with an externally mounted condenser to the flat roof at the rear of the pub, this will not be visible from street level.

"The design process has been developed in collaboration with JDW staff to effectively meet their needs, both financially and practically.

"Consideration has also been given to preserving the existing space and minimising the impact on the building's heritage elements.

"There will be no visible alterations to the external fabric of the building.

"The proposed development will have minimal impact on the broader physical environment, as the majority of changes are confined to the internal layout. These alterations will not affect the external fabric of the building, and no modifications to windows or other external features are proposed."

The work is due to be carried out by Cannock-based company DVA Ventures Limited.
