Quinn and Grouse goals inspire six-hitters Ashby Ivanhoe in convincing cup victory
AFC Mansfield 0 Ashby Ivanhoe 6
A pair of braces from Danny Quinn and Sam Grouse saw Ashby on their way to a resounding victory in the United Counties League Cup.
The victory ended a run of three defeats in all competitions for Ivanhoe, who will look to use the result to regain the momentum which they gathered in the opening games of the season.
They looked to stamp their authority on the contest in the opening 10 minutes, winning a spot kick as a goalbound effort struck the arm of a Mansfield defender.
Quinn though was unable to convert from 12 yards, his penalty not deceiving Adam Revuelta who made the stop, low to his left.
His celebrations were short lived however as Quinn slammed home the opener five minutes later. Receiving the pass from Joel Carta, he flicked the ball past the home left back and struck a powerful shot which gave Revuelta no chance.
A buoyed Ivanhoe doubled their lead a minute later as Josh Thomas clipped a well-placed cross into the box from the right which picked out James Harrison, the striker making no mistake to score his third of the season with a first-time finish.
Mansfield were on the back foot for most of the half but had a fantastic opportunity to halve the deficit when Tremere Lindo popped up at the back post and headed goalwards. On this occasion though, Sam Taylor acrobatically clawed the ball away from goal to preserve the two-goal lead.
Ashby flew out of the blocks after half time and added a third within five minutes of the restart. This time, Quinn was able to convert from the penalty spot following a foul on Will Robson.
Shortly before the hour mark, Revuelta was forced off after an unfortunate leg injury. With no substitute goalkeeper, Mansfield were forced to play the final half an hour with an outfielder in goal, the second time in as many matches that this has happened to Ivanhoe's opponent.
The restart in play saw the introduction of Sam Grouse, who immediately made his mark, scoring with a left footed strike which left the stand in goalkeeper stranded.
Robson was once again one of the stand out performers for Ashby, superbly winning the penalty earlier in the half and deservedly getting on the scoresheet himself. A tiring Mansfield defence took too long closing him down and were punished as his shot arrowed into the far corner.
The scorching heat played a part in a final 20 minutes which was played at a leisurely pace, but Ashby were able to put a final nail in the coffin deep into added time as Grouse doubled his tally.
The forward already has nine goals in all competitions and has shown that his prolific scoring will continue despite moving up a level.
He and the rest of his team mates will hope that they can build from this result when they return to league action against Boston Town next Saturday.
