Bird's Bakery in Market Street has confirmed it is to move to new premises in the town next year - after 50 years at its current site.

The company says the new shop will have 'an enhanced customer experience'.

Bird's has been at its current location since 1973 - and the popular store seen as one of the fixtures of the town centre.

But the premises was recently advertised for sale by commercial estate agent FHP at a price of £675,000.

This also appears to include the addresses 47, and 49-49A Market Street, which includes Johnson's Cleaners and the Air Ambulance Charity Shop.

But, while Bird's says it is staying in the town, the new location for the much-loved store has yet to be officially revealed.

Lesley Bird, chief operating officer at the Derby-based Bird's Bakery, told Ashby Nub News: "We will be relocating to a brand new store in Ashby by early 2024.

"The new store will allow us to continue to serve our delicious baked goods and treats with an enhanced customer experience.

"As we finalise the details of our new location, we want to reassure our customers that we are working diligently to ensure a smooth and seamless experience for everyone."

There are still a number of vacant units in Ashby - but Bird's are keeping the new location under wraps for now.

The FHP description of the address in Market Street says: "The property comprises of a Grade II Listed mid-terrace building which was formerly used as an 18th century house and was later converted to commercial premises.

"The property comprises ground floor retail accommodation and prep kitchen, with first and second floor ancillary accommodation.

"The property at 47 Market Street is occupied in its entirety by Birds (Derby) Ltd. There is rear servicing and two staff car parking spaces. At 49-49a Market Street, the property comprises of a three-storey brick building which has been subdivided into two retail units.

"Part ground floor is occupied by Johnsons Cleaners UK Ltd with the remainder of the ground floor plus first and second floor occupied by Air Ambulance Service Trading Ltd."
